Rattery News

24 May 2009: Two new litters have arrived!  Please send an email if you are interested in babies.

This is a hard year for the rattery, as reducing the overall population is accomplished by having more deaths than births.  Many of my favorite rats born in 2007 have passed on or will pass on this year.

On Harlan supplies:
The Rat Shop is a good resource, but deliveries can take weeks from the West coast.  Mainely Rat Rescue has been recommended as an alternative, though as of this date they are having some problems with Harlan.

So... what happened with Harlan?  They have increased their minimum order by so much that smaller organizations cannot easily fill it.  One would think that in this economy, Harlan would welcome any customers it can get... but apparently not.  Grrrr....

: Welcome to a New Year!  The rattery is still in operation, though I plan to breed no more than 6 litters this year (the minimum needed to sustain the breeding program.)  I had 3 litters in late 2008, with all babies now placed in good homes.  The next litters should arrive in March or April.

Many of us are mourning the loss of the Kim's Ark Store, not to mention Kim's Ark itself, which was a great rescue group and resource in New England for many years.  I've received a number of emails asking where to buy Harlan lab blocks and bedding.  The Rat Shop located in San Jose, CA is selling Harlan products online, including smaller amounts of lab blocks.  I have not used them (yet) but know the owners from my time in California, and suspect they are running a great operation.

RATS MAKE GREAT PETS!

Andover Rattery sells carefully-bred, friendly pet rats.  I've had rats since 1995, and started my current breeding program in 1998.  I am a certified judge for the Rat and Mouse Club of America.  My specialty is marked rats, and I have bred in dumbos and rexes for greater variety.  I breed on a small scale, just a few litters a year, to ensure that all my rats get good homes.

Rats make wonderful pets for children, adults, seniors, day care centers, and classrooms.  They are friendlier than hamsters and smarter than guinea pigs.  They are social animals, best kept in same-sex pairs, trios, or larger groups.  Many have likened them to small dogs, or toddlers, in terms of personality and habits.  They are curious, responsive, trainable, and very cuddly.  The only disadvantage I can say they have is their relatively short lifespan (about 2 years).  Domestic rats do not carry diseases that are dangerous to humans.    For more information, send email to: andoverrattery@yahoo.com
